CONGRESS PROVIDES BIG INCREASE FOR Community Action’S ANTI-POVERTY EFFORT

US Representative Wild to Announce $1.8 Million for Community Action’s Core Funding Source Congresswoman Susan Wild and Alan Jennings, Executive Director of the Community Action Lehigh Valley, will be announcing a major increase in funding for the nation’s 1,100 Community Action Agencies as a result of the passage of the CARES Act in a virtual press conference that will take place via Zoom on Thursday, May 28, at noon. Out of the $1 billion increase in the Community Services Block Grant, Jennings reported that Community Action will receive $1.84 million to be spent by September 30, 2022. Jennings will detail Community Action plans for the use of the added funding. In some cases, Community Action will be expanding existing programming. They will also start a new neighborhood project in Bethlehem and build the organization’s capacity to remain one of the most consequential, community-based nonprofits in the region.

Representative Wild will announce the new funding and comment on her support for the major increase and the difference she is confident the increased resources will make in the lives of many of her 7th Congressional District constituents who struggle on a daily basis to make ends meet.

The Community Action Lehigh Valley was founded in 1965 with support from the Johnson Administration’s Great Society proposals. Over the years, the agency created Neighborhood Youth Corps, now known as CareerLink, Lehigh Valley Legal Services, now known as North Penn Legal Services, and Head Start, now known as Community Services for Children and Safe Harbor Easton. Each of these has been spun off and continue to thrive independently. Today, the agency has a $25 million budget and operates the Second Harvest Food Bank, Sixth Street Shelter in Allentown and Bethlehem, homeownership counseling, housing rehab and many others.
