IS THIS WHAT YOU MEANT?

So many Americans were so fed up with politics as usual that you elected someone as far from “usual” as you could get. Tell me, is this what you meant?

Did you mean that you wanted someone who would align himself with a strong-arm KGB agent who helped throw an American election?

Were you so upset with politics as usual that you wanted someone who, with vitriol, would attack the country’s top law enforcement agency?

Were you so upset with our country that you wanted someone who uses government to enrich himself?

Were you so upset with the status quo that you wanted someone who belittled anyone who got in the way with adolescent personal attacks?

Were you so upset that you wanted someone who would rip into his opponents’ faith?

Did you want someone who believes he is above the law? Someone who projects himself as regal instead of regular? Someone who never flipped a burger, made his own bed or cut his own grass?

Did you want someone who would assassinate a foreign leader, risking sparking World War III?

Did you really want someone who would divide us along racial lines?

Did you want someone who divides our world not between who is with us and who is against us but by who is with or against him personally?

My friends, this is not who we are. Snap out of it. We have ourselves a living nightmare. Don’t try to wake yourself up; we are awake. The damage caused by this single, planet-sized ego is on the verge of being catastrophic. I awake each day in fear; in fear for my country, in fear for my grandchildren.

We don’t solve our problems with hate, personal attacks, privilege and division. We solve problems with diplomacy, with respect and with empathy. That’s not a Democratic thing. It’s not a Republican thing. It’s not a black, white, Southern, Northern, gay, straight, labor, management, elite, redneck, educated or illiterate, rich or poor thing. It’s an American thing.
