NOT JUST A DREAM…

We welcome back to Poverty’s Edge Jennifer Hernandez-Reyes, the Communication and Reporting Coordinator at the Sixth Street Shelter (SSS).

I was recently watching the Olympic trials for the USA teams. The look on the faces of those who won a spot on our team was priceless. It’s hard not to be proud when you’ve made such an accomplishment in your life. It’s the same face that we see here at the shelter when a family moves into their own apartment, or when a family graduates from our long-term programs.

Throughout the years, we have had many families who have successfully overcome the challenges to becoming self-sufficient. One mom recently received her graduation letter from Lehigh Carbon Community College before moving into her next apartment.  The look on her face was as if she had won the gold medal. It is a feeling of success like no other, and even though there were hurdles along the way, they know that they deserve the win. It is moments like these that motivate our staff to keep at it, day in and day out, because everyone deserves a shot at that gold medal.

25 September 2019 This is the highest turnout in the history of the agency, even topping the year HUD secretary Henry Cisneros spoke. There are over 250 good people here. Thanks to each and every one
