Clearing of Site Will Make Way for Expansion of the Sixth Street Shelter
The building at 221-223 North Sixth Street in Allentown will be razed beginning this morning, with the site cleared within days. The Community Action Lehigh Valley, which operates the Sixth Street Shelter, has hired Jerdon Construction Services as the general contractor on the project. Penn Quaker Site Contractors will demolish the building.
Details of the agency’s plans to expand the shelter on the site will be disclosed formally in the next two weeks.
The Sixth Street Shelter, a program of the Community Action Lehigh Valley, was established in 1984 to provide 60 days of shelter and an array of services designed to assist families with children to make the transition from crisis to stability. The agency also operates two long-term transitional housing programs in Allentown and Easton that provide families with vocational services to enable them to move toward self-sufficiency.
