We Are Participating in Hunger Action Month, And You Can, Too
You cannot recognize the face of hunger because it hides from you. It does not discriminate against age, gender, creed, educational attainment, or hometown. Right here in the Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania, more than 63,000 people struggle with hunger each month. That’s a 27% increase over the past three years. The problem is closer than you think, but so is the solution.
September is Hunger Action Month and the Second Harvest Food Bank of LehighValley and Northeast Pennsylvania is asking you to step up and play a role in ending domestic hunger.
It’s easy to get involved. You can start by visiting our website to learn more about Hunger Action Month. For inspiration and ideas on how you can raise awareness about hunger, visit the “30 Ways in 30 Days” calendar and share it with your family, friends, and co-workers. You will see that there are a number of ways that you can get involved from finding us on Facebook to writing a blog entry about local hunger; from volunteering at your local soup kitchen or pantry to organizing a food drive; from registering to vote to writing your elected official about hunger. There is a way that you can raise awareness about hunger regardless of your age, talents, or interests.
Check out our Facebook page where we’ll be posting daily videos of people just like you talking about how they are fighting hunger and, most importantly, how you can too. Today, see the story of Daina Nanchanatt, a Muhlenberg student who blogged about how her experience volunteering with SHFB changed her perception about poverty.
And remember, we want to hear from YOU! Share your Hunger Action Month experiences with us through Facebook, by emailing us at shfb-info@caclv.org, or by calling us at 610-434-0875. We’d love to feature the photos of stories of YOU fighting hunger!
I’m taking action to raise awareness about hunger and our community, and you can too!
